Years active: 2002-present

Vivek Oberoi was born in Mumbai, India, and attended Mayo college in Ajmer. At an actors' workshop in London he was spotted by the director of NYU, who took Oberoi to New York City to complete his Masters Degree in film acting. After returning, Vivek worked as a scriptwriter and bought his first car with the money he made from the job. Oberoi's big break came when noted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma offered him a role in his gangster movie Company (2002). This was an unusual entrance for debutants in Bollywood; young actors normally first play good lover boys to secure their place. Apparently, Ram Gopal Varma was having second thoughts about casting Oberoi in Company because he thought Vivek looked too cute for a gangster. To prove Varma wrong, Vivek went to the slums of Mumbai to research the role. He later barged into Varma's office dressed as Chandu the gangster, swung his feet up on the table, and was given the part. Oberoi quickly emerged as a prominent Bollywood actor. His performance in Company - in which he starred opposite Ajay Devgan, Manisha Koirala and Mohanlal - was more than enough to get the media's attention. Next in line was the psycho-thriller Road (2002) (opposite Company co-star Antara Mali), Dum (2003) (which tanked, although Oberoi emerged unscathed), and Saathiya (2002), opposite Rani Mukerji. Oberoi was previously engaged to Gurpreet Brar, but the two did not wed. He started dating Aishwarya Rai for two years. Oberoi recently made news during a press conference when he made a public outburst against Salman Khan, who he claims called him repeatedly. In 2006, Ms. Rai ended the relationship between them.
